Appointment of Governors
Governors are appointed to the Board of Governors by a decision of the full Board, following a recommendation by the Search Committee.
The procedures used by the Search Committee to recommend appointments have changed recently. Before 1 January 2008, when revised Instrument and Articles of Government were introduced, governors had to be selected from particular categories of background, for example business and community organisations, and some governors were nominated by, for example, Local Authorities. The new Instrument and Articles remove these restrictions.
The Search Committee maintains a register of persons who have expressed an interest in becoming a governor. It does this by advertising for expressions of interest. When a vacancy occurs for an external governor, the Search Committee meets to decide what skills and experience will strengthen the Board and identifies individuals with those skills from the register or by further advertising. After interviewing suitable candidates the Committee recommends an appointment to the Board. In making its recommendations the Committee attempts to make the Board reflect our local communities in terms of gender, ethnicity and age, and also the wide geographical spread of the communities served by the college.
The procedures for appointing staff and student governors differ from that for external governors. Staff and student governors are elected by the staff and students.
The college welcomes approaches from persons interested in becoming a governor. If you are interested in helping the college in this way please contact
