Overview

The brickwork level 1 course covers all the elements of bricklaying, from using handtools and equipment, to build basic half brick walls, to solid walling and constructing cavity walls. Alongside the practical tasks, you will learn about;

  • materials and equipment
  • types of bricks and blocks
  • bonding of brickwork
  • setting out and cavity walls.

You will work in a purpose built workshop, that is designed to stretch and challenge your skills and knowledge during training for synoptic end assessments using the very best, up-to-date resources that the industry has to offer. Theory classes are held in modern classrooms with excellent resources and taught by highly experienced and knowledgeable staff.

Over the year, you will achieve the qualifications by attending college three days per week (full-time only).

Modules and units

The brickwork level 1 course covers all elements of bricklaying and site work.

The units on the brickwork level 1 course will include:
  • Block walling
  • Brick walling
  • Cavity walling
  • Health, safety and welfare in construction
  • Knowledge of technical information
  • Knowledge of construction technology
  • Setting out basic structures
  • Mix construction materials
Other related subjects include:
  • Health and safety
  • Mixing of mortar and concrete
  • Identification of tools and equipment
  • Knowledge of building materials

Entry requirements

Ideally, you will have GCSEs in English and Maths at grade D/3 or above.

Applicants who have not achieved at least a grade C/4 in English and Maths will continue to study these subjects alongside their chosen college course.

How will I be assessed?

The brickwork level 1 diploma will be assessed by practical end tests and online end of unit tests.

Progression and employment

Successful completion of all elements of this course can lead to the Brickwork Level 2 study programme or ideally on to a Level 2 Brickwork Apprenticeship.

How much will the course cost me?

This course is free of charge for 16 – 18 year olds. There may be an additional cost for trips and equipment but this will be disclosed prior to starting your course.
