This course covers all the elements of Carpentry & Joinery from preparing Timber joints to industry standards to more complex tasks according to ability.

You will work in a purpose built Joinery workshop that is designed to stretch and challenge all learner’s skills and knowledge during training for assessments using the very best, up to date resources that the industry has to offer. Theory classes are held in modern classrooms with excellent interactive resources and taught by experienced and knowledgeable staff.

Over the year, you will achieve the qualifications by attending college three days per week. (Full time only)

The team have sponsorship from Howdens and Festool ensuring apprentices work with the latest products, materials and power tool technology.

Modules and units

This course covers all elements of Carpentry & Joinery and site work.  Other related subjects include:

Basic tool identification and use including sharpening and maintenance

  • Marking out to allow timber joints to be manufactured
  • Development of technical drawing ability
  • Construction documentation
  • Health & Safety awareness
  • Timber joints

Units include:

  • Introduction to other craft trade areas and how they interact with C&J
  • Introduction to construction documentation
  • Construction technology & building methods
  • Building methods and building technology
  • Carry out safe working practices
  • Information and quantities

Entry requirements

Ideally, you will have GCSEs in English and Maths at grade D/3 or above.

Applicants who have not achieved at least a grade C/4 in English and Maths will continue to study these subjects alongside their chosen college course.

How will I be assessed?

Your diploma will be assessed by practical end tests and online end of unit tests.

Progression and employment

Successful completion of this Level 1 Diploma will lead to the Level 2 Diploma in Site Carpentry or Bench  Joinery or ideally in to an apprenticeship.

How much will the course cost me?

This course is free of charge for 16 – 18 year olds. There may be an additional cost for trips and equipment but this will be disclosed prior to starting your course.
