This is a one year full-time course which involves three days of study a week. The course is designed to provide an introduction in to the construction industry. This will include the high expectations and standards of employers within the industry encouraging and supporting you to develop the skills required to progress into further academic study and employment within the construction industry. The course provides opportunity to develop skills and knowledge in painting and decorating, plastering, bricklaying and carpentry and joinery.

English and maths: Alongside this programme you will complete functional skills English and maths. These lessons will give you the key skills to progress effectively in everyday life and employment.

Work related learning: During work related learning session there is a focus on developing industry relevant skills and knowledge. There is also opportunity to explore subject areas such as equality and diversity, healthy living, money management and enterprise activities. Work-Related Learning sessions are designed to complement the vocational sessions with project based work in which learners will plan and deliver their own projects, learners must apply for a range of vocationally relevant roles and apply their skills and knowledge to meet the criteria of the course. Learners are currently re-designing the student area providing all aspects of the work including planning and redecoration.

Tutorial is a workshop designed to develop your employability skills and produce a portfolio of evidence including a CV, personal statement, and general evidence of good practice within your academic studies.

The completion of the Developing Multi-Trade Skills qualification is for learners seeking to develop greater independence and to enter supported employment or to progress to a higher level vocationally-related qualification. The course gives you the opportunity to:

  • Achieve a nationally recognised entry level qualification
  • Develop interests in different areas which may enable progression to a vocational qualification
  • Engage in learning which is relevant to you and will provide opportunities to develop a range of life skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes
  • Progress to related general and/or vocational qualifications
  • Progress to supported employment in a particular vocational sector.

Entry requirements

The Developing Multi-Trades Skills programme is aimed at students aged 16 – 19 years who are possibly achieving at Entry Level 2. You must have English and maths at Entry Level 1 or 2, and you will be expected to attend a college interview.

Applicants who have not achieved at least a grade C/4 in English and maths will continue to study these subjects alongside their chosen college course.

How will I be assessed?

The vocational qualification will be assessed throughout the year through written, practical and oral assignments. English and maths are assessed through a final exam.

Progression and employment

Successful completion of this Entry Level 3 Developing Multi-Trades Skills qualification can lead to a place on a Level 1 Construction Trades and Building Services programme.

How much will the course cost me?

This course is free of charge for 16 – 18 year olds. There may be an additional cost for trips and equipment but this will be disclosed prior to starting your course.
