The NCFE CACHE Level 2 Certificate in an Introduction to Early Years Education and Care prepares learners to work with children between birth and five years, with knowledge of children up to seven years. Upon achievement of this qualification, learners can progress onto any of our Level 3 qualifications in the Early Years Educator suite.

This qualification is ideal if you are looking to work with children between birth and five years, and gain knowledge of working with children up to seven years. You do not need to have previous experience or qualifications in working with children to undertake this qualification.

You will need to be working, volunteering or on practical placement as you will need to show competence in both knowledge and skills.

This qualification is suitable for a range of learners from the age of 16 onwards who have little or no experience in childcare.

You will do 250 work placement hours whilst undertaking this qualification.

Completion of this qualification is achieved through a combination of classroom based learning and experience in the workplace.

Modules and units

All the units within this qualification are vocationally based, directly helping you gain the knowledge, understanding and skills required to work to work with children between birth and five years, with knowledge of children up to seven years. The following are mandatory units:

  • An introduction to the role of the early year’s practitioner
  • Engage in professional development.
  • Support children’s play in early years
  • Support children’s positive behaviour
  • Support physical care routines for children
  • Support the needs of the child in preparing for school
  • Supporting children’s development
  • Supporting children’s play
  • Understand how to plan to meet the needs of the developing child
  • Understand how to work in partnership
  • Understand legislation relating to the safeguarding, protection and welfare of children
  • Use legislation relating to equality, diversity and inclusive practice
  • Use legislation relating to the health and safety of children
  • Use observation, assessment and planning.

The qualification also includes four optional units:

  • Healthy lifestyles for children through exercise
  • Healthy lifestyles for children through the provision of food and nutrition
  • Supporting children with additional needs
  • Supporting creative play.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at grade C/4 and above, including English and maths.

Applicants who have not achieved at least a grade C/4 in English and maths will continue to study these subjects alongside their chosen college course.

How will I be assessed?

All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods, this could include direct observation within the workplace, a portfolio of evidence, written assignments or a task. Some learning outcomes within this qualification will require assessment in a real work environment.

Progression and employment

This qualification allows progression on to the Level 3 Early Years Educator qualifications and other Level 3 qualifications relating to child care.

How much will the course cost me?

This course is free of charge for 16 – 18 year olds. There may be an additional cost for trips and equipment but this will be disclosed prior to starting your course.
