You will learn skills that are essential for a successful career as a make-up artist. You will develop an understanding of health and safety and client care in the industry. You will gain knowledge in applying make-up for day, evening and special occasions.  You will develop an understanding of the art of photographic and media make-up. You will create an image based on a theme and design face and body art.  You will develop skills in shampooing and conditioning, the art of dressing hair, cutting women’s hair and plaiting and twisting.

Entry requirements

You will need at least four GCSEs at grade D/3, English and maths are to be included in these or Level 1 Hairdressing or Beauty Therapy or equivalent.

Applicants who have not achieved at least a grade C/4 in English and maths will continue to study these subjects alongside their chosen college course.

How will I be assessed?

Online tests in college and carrying out practical assessments on models and clients.

Progression and employment

Successful completion of this course can lead on to a Level 3 Theatrical, Special Effects, Hair and Media Make-up or a Level 3 Hairdressing programme.

How much will the course cost me?

This course is free of charge for 16 – 18 year olds. There may be an additional cost for trips and equipment but this will be disclosed prior to starting your course.

Additional and key information

Applicants who have not achieved at least a grade C/4 in English and maths will continue to study these subjects alongside their chosen college course.

For health and safety reasons and in order to comply with the code of ethics in assessment, you must comply with the following:

  • You will require a kit and uniform; this should be purchased through the College.
  • A uniform must be worn at all times.
  • You are required to bring into college your kit and any stationary needed to complete your college work for every session on your timetable.

You will be required to undertake work experience on additional days, evenings and weekends to enhance your portfolio of skills.

This course will provide opportunities to carryout make-up for Theatre performances. You will take part in photo shoots.

We will be looking at a weekend trip to IMATS in London.
