Overview

This qualification will develop your knowledge and awareness of the types of provision in the health, social care and children’s and young people’s sectors. These include the roles played by workers – from principles and values through to health and safety and working with others.

This qualification:

  • allows learners to gain the knowledge, understanding and skills required for employment and/or career progression in the sectors
  • allows learners to tailor their learning to their interests through the provision of a broad range of optional units
  • is aimed at learners who wish to develop an understanding of these settings before deciding whether working in the sector is for them
  • provides learners with the opportunity to progress to employment, in due course, in a range of job roles in the care sectors.
  • provides opportunities for the development of transferable skills
  • supports progression to Level 2 qualifications in health, social care or children’s settings

This qualification is suitable for anyone considering a career in health and/or social care with adults or children and young people.

Completion of this qualification is achieved through classroom-based learning.

Modules and units

This qualification provides you with an introductory knowledge of working in health, social care and children and young people’s settings.

The qualification is formed of mandatory and optional units. The optional units allow you to choose from a variety of areas to tailor the qualification to your interests. From the mandatory units below, you will gain knowledge and understanding in the following areas within health, social care and children and young people’s settings:

  • Communication
  • Equality and inclusion
  • Health and safety
  • Person-centred approaches
  • Principles and values
  • Protection and safeguarding
  • Service provision and roles.

From the optional units, you will gain knowledge and understanding in the areas of your choice within health, social care and children and young people’s settings, these include (but are not limited to):

  • duty of care
  • healthy lifestyle
  • human growth and development
  • introduction to autistic spectrum condition
  • introduction to mental health
  • introductory awareness of bereavement
  • investigating a vocational area
  • job opportunities
  • understanding risk
  • working with others.

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs including English or maths at grade 3 and the others at grade 2.

Applicants who have not achieved at least a grade C/4 in English and maths will continue to study these subjects alongside their chosen college course.

How will I be assessed?

It will be assessed by your tutor or assessor using a range of methods. This could include tasks such as designing charts or leaflets, coursework or methods such as oral questioning.

Progression and employment

After completing this course you can progress on to the Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care, the Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People’s Workforce or the Level 2 Certificate in an Introduction to Early Years Education and Care.

How much will the course cost me?

This course is free of charge for 16 – 18 year olds. There may be an additional cost for trips and equipment but this will be disclosed prior to starting your course.
