This hospitality, food and beverage qualification is a good starting point to pursuing a career in the hospitality industry. The course involves working in our new state-of-the-art facility, Roots Restaurant. You will learn all of the skills and attributes required to progress onto a Level 3 programme or start your career within the hospitality industry.

This qualification:

  • allows learners to gain the knowledge, understanding and skills required for employment and/or career progression within the industry
  • allows learners to tailor their learning to their interests through the provision of a broad range of optional units
  • is aimed at learners who wish to pursue a career within the hospitality industry
  • provides learners with the opportunity to progress to employment, in due course, in a range of job roles in the care sectors
  • provides opportunities for the development of transferable skills
  • supports progression to Level 3 Hospitality Supervision and Leadership.

Completion of this qualification is achieved through a combination of classroom based learning, practical skills sessions and work related learning in Roots Restaurant.

All the units within this qualification are vocationally based, directly helping you gain the knowledge, understanding and skills required to work within the hospitality industry.

External work experience will also be completed throughout the year.

This qualification is suitable for a range of learners from the age of 16 onwards who have little or no experience in hospitality.

Modules and units

The qualification is made up of mandatory and optional units. The following are mandatory units:

  • Food safety
  • Health and safety
  • Positive impressions
  • Teamwork

The following units are some of the optional units which may be selected or you choose to study

  • Maintain and deal with payments
  • Prepare and clear areas for table service
  • Prepare and clear the bar area
  • Prepare and serve hot drinks using specialist equipment
  • Provide a counter and take away service
  • Serve alcoholic and soft drinks
  • Serve food at the table.

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at grade D/3 and above, including English and maths.

Applicants who have not achieved at least a grade C/4 in English and maths will continue to study these subjects alongside their chosen college course.

How will I be assessed?

All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods. This could include direct observation within the workplace, a portfolio of evidence, written assignments or a task. Some learning outcomes within this qualification will require assessment in a real work environment.

Progression and employment

This qualification allows progression on to the Level 3 Hospitality Supervision and Leadership programme.

How much will the course cost me?

This course is free of charge for 16 – 18 year olds. There may be an additional cost for trips and equipment but this will be disclosed prior to starting your course.
