Overview

The hospitality level 2, food and beverage qualification is a good starting point for you to pursue a career in the hospitality industry. The course involves working in our state-of-the-art Heartwood Centre and Roots Restaurant. You will learn all of the skills and attributes required to progress onto a Level 3 programme or start your career within the hospitality industry.

The hospitality level 2 qualification;

  • allows you to gain the knowledge, understanding and skills required for employment and/or career progression within the industry
  • allows you to tailor your learning to your interests through the provision of a broad range of optional units
  • is aimed at those who wish to pursue a career within the hospitality industry
  • provides you with the opportunity to progress to employment, in due course, in a range of job roles in the hospitality and catering sectors
  • provides you with opportunities for the development of transferable skills
  • supports your progression to a Level 3 Hospitality Supervision and Leadership.

Completion of this qualification is achieved through a combination of classroom based learning, practical skills sessions and work related learning in Roots Restaurant.

All the units within this qualification are vocationally based, directly helping you gain the knowledge, understanding and skills required to work within the hospitality and catering sectors.

You will also complete external work experience throughout the year.

This qualification is suitable for a range of learners from the age of 16 onwards who have little or no experience within the hospitality and catering sectors.

Modules and units

The hospitality level 2 qualification is made up of mandatory and optional units for you to choose from.

The following are mandatory units for the hospitality level 2 qualification:
  • Food safety
  • Health and safety
  • Positive impressions
  • Teamwork.
You may select some of the optional units below to study:
  • Clear areas and prepare for table service
  • Maintain and deal with payments
  • Prepare and clear the bar area
  • Prepare and serve hot drinks using specialist equipment
  • Provide a counter and take away service
  • Serve alcoholic and soft drinks
  • Serve food at the table.

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at grade D/3 and above, including English and maths.

Applicants who have not achieved at least a grade C/4 in English and maths will continue to study these subjects in addition to their chosen college course.

How will I be assessed?

All the units on the hospitality level 2 qualification will be internally assessed using a range of methods. This could include;

  • a portfolio of evidence
  • direct observation within the workplace
  • written assignments or a practical task.

Some learning outcomes within this qualification will require assessment in a real work environment.

Progression and employment

This qualification allows progression on to the Level 3 Hospitality Supervision and Leadership programme or to a Level 3 Hospitality Apprenticeship.

How much will the course cost me?

This course is free of charge for 16 – 18 year olds. There may be an additional cost for trips and equipment but this will be disclosed prior to starting your course.
