Overview

This is a foundation course in basic brickwork and related subjects. It is open access to anyone with a keen interest in improving their practical skills and provides the opportunity to obtain a basic qualification. The course is flexible for students who wish to build brick projects for the home, after the initial basic training. It is suitable for people who want to gain the basic tool skills or a DIY enthusiast.

The course is taught on an evening, part-time basis, for three and a half hours every week for nine weeks; or from 10:00-15:30 1 day per week. Please note that demand for the course is extremely high and places are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis; there are two intakes (one in September, one in January) but enrolment for both intakes commences in the summer.

The course may allow individuals to carry out projects that will help them further develop their own practical skills.

Modules and units

May include:

  • Building corners square
  • Health and Safety
  • Laying Bricks to a straight line.

Other modules available based on previous experience.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements needed to enrol on this course, however, a reasonable standard of education in English and maths is required.

How will I be assessed?

The qualification is assessed by means of a practical test and the completion of a workbook.

Progression and employment

It provides an excellent preparation and training for working in the Construction Industry with its emphasis on the development of skills. Successful completion of this course also allows progression to a range of construction programmes.
