Apprenticeships offer a solid structure for training of new employees or for existing employees to up-skill and progress within an organisation.

This apprenticeship provides the skills, knowledge and competence required to become an IT, Software, Web or Telecoms Professional in a wide range of job roles.

The apprenticeship programme combines skills and knowledge with employment in an IT role, meaning that apprentices are paid throughout the programme.

Support will be offered to find your apprenticeship.

Modules and units

Modules for the competence section of the qualification include:

  • Health and safety in ICT
  • Develop own effectiveness and professionalism level 3

Optional units may also include:

  • Customer care in ICT
  • Investigating and defining customer requirements for ICT systems
  • Creating an object-oriented computer program
  • Remote support for products or services
  • Software installation and upgrade

Please note: further units may also be selected to suit the job role.

Modules for the knowledge section of the qualification include:

  • Computer systems
  • Networking principles
  • IT technical support

Entry requirements

  • English grade A*-C/9-4 (or equivalent)
  • Maths grade A*-C/9-4 (or equivalent)
  • College interview

Applicants who do not meet the exact entry requirements may also be considered.

Applicants who have not achieved at least a grade C/4 in English and maths will continue to study these subjects alongside their chosen college course.

Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)

The nine national outcomes for Employee Rights & Responsibilities is formally assessed and verified through the knowledge and competence qualifications.

Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS)

This framework includes the mapping of Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) which have been mapped to the mandatory units of the knowledge and competence qualification. They are:

  • Creative thinkers
  • Reflective learners
  • Team workers
  • Self-managers
  • Effective participators

You will be assessed through onsite visits and reviews.

Progression and employment

Possible career paths include progression to work, progression within an existing role or progression in education e.g. BSc (Hons) Software Development or a Higher Apprenticeship for IT, Software, Web & Telecoms Professionals.

Apprentices who have completed a Level 3 apprenticeship programme have often progressed within their career to take on team leader or senior level positions, utilising their expanding technical expertise – and guiding and training others within the organisation.
