The purpose of this apprenticeship is to ensure apprentices have the appropriate set of skills to operate in todays IT & Telecoms job roles, this will enable an increasing number of well-trained new entrants to join the sector.

Research has found that there is a need for over 110,500 new entrants a year over the next 5 years into IT & Telecoms professional occupations. Apprenticeships are a vital route to bring new entrants into this growing area.

You need to be employed in a role where you will be able to provide all the evidence needed for the ‘competency’ element – typical employment will be network engineer, IT customer support, software developer.

Support will be offered to find your apprenticeship.

HNC Units

  • Business skills for e-Commerce (m)
  • Computer systems (m)
  • Systems analysis and design
  • Networking technologies
  • Employability & professional development (m)
  • IT support for end users
  • Procedural programming
  • Website design

NVQ Units

  • Apart from two mandatory units, you will have an individual set of units agreed to address your needs

The HNC assessment methods will include written report, case study and course work together with observations and professional discussions within the workplace.

Entry requirements

  • Relevant Work Experience at appropriate level
  • Level 3 in Relevant Vocational Area e.g. Diploma Level 3, BTEC National Diploma
  • College interview
  • Currently employed

How will I be assessed?

HNC assessment methods will include written report, case study and course work. Where possible, all assessment will be related to the workplace.

Competence assessment will be by the observation of tasks in the workplace, professional discussion with you and line manager, as appropriate.

You will complete assignments throughout the course as well as undertake an NVQ element in the workplace. The main method of assessment will be in the workplace with tutors visiting you at work.

Qualifications achieved

  • Higher National Certificate In Computing and Systems Development Level 4
  • Professional Competence for IT and Telecoms Professionals Level 4 Diploma

If you have not already gained English and maths at the appropriate level, you will be offered them.

Progression and employment

Following the completion of the Level 4 Higher Apprenticeship framework, successful apprentices will be able to follow up on their HNC studies and continue on to complete a full Honours degree programme.

Other progression opportunities may include further learning in other business areas, such as finance, business or sales or a role within the computing and telecoms industry.
