This qualification will develop basic knowledge and skills within the catering industry. You will work in our state-of-the-art facility, The Heartwood Centre, which houses a fine dining restaurant, preparation and training kitchens, retail outlet and storage warehouse. This allows students to prepare for a career in hospitality and catering in one of the most advanced training facilities in the country.

This qualification:

  • allows learners to gain the knowledge, understanding and skills required for employment and/or career progression in the sectors
  • is aimed at learners who wish to develop an understanding of these settings before deciding whether working in the sector is for them
  • provides learners with the opportunity to progress to employment, in due course, in a range of job roles in the catering sectors
  • provides opportunities for the development of transferable skills
  • supports progression to Level 2 Professional Cookery qualification.

This course is suitable for anyone considering a career in hospitality and catering. Primary focus of the catering sector of becoming a chef.

Modules and units

This qualification provides you with an introductory knowledge of working in hospitality and catering. The qualification is formed of mandatory units, including:

  • Exploring balanced diets
  • Plan and produce dishes in response to a brief
  • Preparing to cook
  • Understanding food.

Completion of this qualification is achieved through classroom-based learning and practical sessions.

The practical elements consist of skills sessions and production sessions that allow you to work in a realistic working environment that mirrors industry expectations.

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs including either English or maths at grade D/3 and the other at grade E/2.

Applicants who have not achieved at least a grade C/4 in English and maths will continue to study these subjects alongside their chosen college course.

How will I be assessed?

It will be assessed by your tutor or assessor using a range of methods. This could include tasks such as designing dishes and menus, assignments and questioning.

Progression and employment

The Level 2 Diploma in Professional Cookery or the Level 2 Hospitality (Food and Beverage Service) programmes.

How much will the course cost me?

This course is free of charge for 16 – 18 year olds. There may be an additional cost for trips and equipment but this will be disclosed prior to starting your course.
