During this course you will cover many aspects of Substance Misuse Work. It will assist you in being able to:

  • Assess and monitor risk
  • Assess individuals needs and appropriate interventions
  • Handle information and maintain records
  • Recognise indications of use
  • Referral of individuals
  • Support individuals to adopt safer practices
  • Support individuals to identify, access and evaluate services
  • Support individuals to reduce substance use
  • Understand about different substances, their effects and how they may be used.

Entry requirements

For this course you will need to be working or volunteering in a service that deals with substance misuse problems as well as having approval from a supervisor at that organisation. All applicants are interviewed and you will also need to complete interview tasks. Additionally, you will need to have a Level 2 qualification or above, however, whilst it would be preferable to be in Substance Misuse, this is not essential.

How will I be assessed?

During this course you will undertake two extended pieces of writing and produce a portfolio of evidence. You will also be observed in the workplace and submit witness testimonies detailing the work you have completed.

Progression and employment

On successful completion of your course, you may consider continuing your education and progressing to the Foundation Degree in Alcohol and Substance Misuse Work also offered at the college.
