Course Overview

The Construction Building industry have a traditional role in supplying a qualified workforce to small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

An apprenticeship in construction follows a pattern of vocational training to meet the requirements of a Construction Skills approved framework.

The Carpentry & Joinery department deliver high quality training by lecturers and assessors who have many years experience in the trade as well as experience in working on projects such as The English Heritage Project.

The department facilities include two workshops, a state of the art Joinery Machine shop and a designated Site Carpentry area.

The team have sponsorship from Howdens and Festool ensuring apprentices work with the latest products, materials and power tool technology.

Support will be offered to find your apprenticeship.

What will I learn?

Mandatory units:

  • Conforming to general health, safety and welfare in the workplace
  • Conforming to productive working practices in the workplace
  • Moving, handling and storing resources in the workplace

Optional units:

  • Installing first fixing components in the workplace
  • Installing second fixing components in the workplace
  • Erecting structural carcassing components in the workplace
  • Maintaining non-structural carpentry work in the workplace
  • Setting up and using transportable cutting and shaping machines in the workplace

The nine national outcomes for the employee rights and responsibilities (ERR) is an induction programme for direct entrants and will be delivered within the knowledge section of this framework.

This framework includes the mapping of Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) which have been mapped to the mandatory units of the knowledge and competence qualification. They are:

  • Reflective learners
  • Team workers
  • Self-managers
  • Effective participators

You will achieve the following qualifications

  • NVQ Diploma in Wood Occupations Site Carpentry Level 2
  • Diploma in Site Carpentry Level 2
  • Maths Functional Skills Level 1
  • English Functional Skills Level 1
  • ERR
  • PLTS
How will the course be assessed?

You will be assessed through onsite visits, reviews and an online portfolio.

Materials and other information

Applicants who do not meet the exact entry requirements may also be considered.

Applicants who have not achieved at least a grade C/4 in English and maths will continue to study these subjects alongside their chosen college course.

Progression and Careers

Apprentices who follow these pathways can have a varied career working on new builds, refurbishments or in specialist areas. Apprentices at this level could progress to Level 3 Advanced.

  • Contracts Manager
  • Self Employment in the Construction Industry
