Course Overview

The Construction Building industry have a traditional role in supplying a qualified workforce to small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

An apprenticeship in construction follows a pattern of vocational training to meet the requirements of a Construction Skills approved framework. This enables apprentices to develop skills and knowledge which they can then demonstrate and evidence in a real construction environment.

This apprenticeship offers the opportunity to learn in a large, state of the art workshop to industry standards and work on a construction site or in a domestic / commercial premises.

Apprentices will learn how to prepare surfaces, apply all types of wall coverings to ceilings and walls and apply paint systems by brush, roller and HVLP and airless spray.

Apprentices will also learn decorative effects and decorative finishing.

Support will be offered to find your apprenticeship.

What will I learn?
  • Health, safety & welfare in construction
  • Knowledge of technical information and communication
  • Knowledge of construction industry
  • Prepare surfaces for decoration
  • Apply paint systems by brush & roller
  • Apply specialist papers to ceilings and walls
  • Produce advanced decorative finishes
  • Apply paint systems by Airless spray
  • Erect and dismantle access equipment and working platforms
  • Carry out specialist architectural feature work

The nine national outcomes for the employee rights and responsibilities (ERR) will be met by the completion of an induction programme.

This framework includes the mapping of Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) which have been mapped to the mandatory units of the knowledge and competence qualification. They are…

  • NVQ Diploma in Decorative Finishing and Industrial Painting Occupations Level 3
  • Diploma in Painting & Decorating Level 3

How will the course be assessed?

You will be assessed through onsite visits, reviews and an online portfolio.

Materials and other information

Applicants who do not meet the exact entry requirements may also be considered.

Applicants who have not achieved at least a grade C/4 in English and maths will continue to study these subjects alongside their chosen college course.

Progression and Careers

There are a wide range of opportunities that apprentices can be involved with in a structured career path, such as new builds and refurbishments. Apprentices could be involved in small domestic projects or major projects

After gaining work experience in the chosen occupational area there are also opportunities to progress into occupational work supervision, management or technical support areas or:

  • HNC / HND in Construction
  • Apprenticeship in Management Level 4/5
