The Access to Higher Education (HE) Diploma prepares students for study at HE degree level either at this college or at another university.

It is designed for people who would like to study in HE a degree, but who left school without the sufficient qualifications.

Our Access to Higher Education Diploma is split in to two pathways; Social Science and Health and Science. Your chosen career path will determine which pathway is most suitable for you.

To support your application, you will be invited to attend an informal interview, giving you the opportunity to discuss your career choice, skills and any relevant experience you have as well as being given expert advice as to how best to strengthen your future application for university.

Modules and units

For careers and future studies in health or science you will study:

  • Academic writing
  • Biology
  • Drugs, disease and biological defences
  • Human anatomy
  • Principles of safeguarding in health and social care
  • Research methods
  • Social issues in health care
  • Study skills.

For careers and future studies in social sciences you will study:

  • Academic Writing
  • Counselling
  • Mental Health
  • Psychology
  • Research methods
  • Sociology.

Entry requirements

You don’t need to have any particular previous qualifications to start the course and it doesn’t matter how long it is since you last studied. However, some universities require particular GCSEs or equivalents qualifications and this is the information we will base our decision on when offering places for the course. It is essential for you to contact them the universities you are interested in to find out their entry requirements also to gain this information.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through a variety of methods including assignments, exams and presentations all at Level 3.

Progression and employment

After completing the Access to Health Professions Pathway you can continue you studies here at college on one of the following BA or FdA courses:-

  • FdA Alcohol and Substance Misuse Work
  • FdA Counselling Studies
  • FdA Early Years
  • FdA Health and Social Care
  • FdA Mental Health Work
