Overview

This course covers all the elements of Construction & Civil Engineering from using handtools and equipment to produce sub bases, laying paving and blocks and mixing and laying concrete slabs. Alongside the practical tasks, you will learn about materials and equipment, types of construction materials, use of various small plant.

You will work on a specially designed outdoor construction training area to stretch and challenge all learner’s skills and knowledge during training for synoptic end assessments using the very best, up to date resources that the industry has to offer. Theory classes are held in modern classrooms with excellent resources and taught by highly experienced and knowledgeable staff.

Over the year, you will achieve the qualifications by attending college three days per week. (Full time only)

Entry requirements

Ideally, you will have GCSEs in English and maths at grade D/3
or above.

Applicants who have not achieved at least a grade C/4 in English and maths will continue to study these subjects alongside their chosen college course.

How will I be assessed?

Your diploma will be assessed by practical end tests and online end of unit tests.

Progression and employment

Successful completion of this Level 1 Diploma will lead to the Level 2 Diploma in Construction & Civil Engineering or ideally in to an apprenticeship.

How much will the course cost me?

This course is free of charge for 16 – 18 year olds. There may be an additional cost for trips and equipment but this will be disclosed prior to starting your course.

Much of the theory content and written work of this course will be available on-line through the College’s “itslearning” virtual learning environment. Candidates must be prepared to use IT as part of their learning.

What will I study?

Course content: This course involves 3 days of study a week. The course will give learners the opportunity to engage in learning which will provide opportunities to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life, whilst developing their knowledge and awareness of General Construction Operations Maths and English: Alongside this programme you will complete Functional Skills maths and English. These lessons will give you the key skills to progress effectively in everyday life and employment. Note: if you achieve a grade D in either English or Maths then you will be working towards a further GCSE alongside your Functional skills. Work related learning: The work related learning programme focuses on the high expectations of employers, encouraging and supporting learners to develop the skills required to progress into other vocational areas and employment. This includes subject areas such as equality and diversity, healthy living, money management and enterprise activities, Volunteer work and soft skills development.
