This qualification covers a range of key subject areas in health and social care and including optional units, allowing learners to pursue an interest in chosen subject areas. This qualification:

  • allows learners to gain the knowledge, understanding and skills required for employment and/or career progression in the sectors
  • is aimed at learners who wish to develop an understanding and build their skills within the sector
  • provides opportunities for the development of transferable skills.

This qualification is suitable for a range of learners from the age of 16 onwards who have little or no experience in health and social care.

Learners are required to attend placement in a real work environment order to support their learning.

Modules and units

Learners must achieve five mandatory units and two optional units covering key areas of current practice in health and social care such as:

  • Equality, diversity and rights in health and social care
  • Human growth and development
  • Safeguarding and protection for health and social care.

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at grade D/3 and above, including English and maths.

Applicants who have not achieved at least a grade C/4 in English and maths will continue to study these subjects alongside their chosen college course.

How will I be assessed?

All units will be internally assessed using a range of methods. This could include direct observation within the workplace, a portfolio of evidence, written assignments or a task. Some learning outcomes within this qualification will require assessment in a real work environment. All units in this qualification are internally graded A*-D.

Progression and employment

These qualifications provide direct progression to our Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care. These qualifications do not provide a licence to practise, but may support progression into a range of job roles in the health and social care sector, including:

  • Care support workers in adult residential settings
  • Care support workers in domiciliary services, supported living or day services
  • Community-based support workers
  • Healthcare assistants in community, primary care and acute health environments.

How much will the course cost me?

This course is free of charge for 16 – 18 year olds. There may be an additional cost for trips and equipment but this will be disclosed prior to starting your course.
