This course will interest if you are 16-19 and have a keen interest in the motor vehicle industry; it also can help you in to full-time employment on completing your qualification. This is both a practical and theory course offering you an introduction to the motor industry, which will contribute to a full qualification including knowledge of a wide range of vehicle systems. You will cover all basic practical systems of the motor vehicle including engines, braking systems, transmission systems and electrical systems. The qualification develops both your competency in the workshop and your under-pinning knowledge in the classroom.

Entry requirements

You will need GCSEs in the D/3 range or above or and have a positive attitude and the potential and stamina to complete the programme and progress.  A keen interest in the motor industry, and keen interest to succeed is also required.

Applicants who have not achieved at least a grade C/4 in English and maths will continue to study these subjects alongside their chosen college course.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed through coursework and practical projects.

Progression and employment

Successful completion of all aspects of this course can lead to the Level 2 study programme in Light Vehicle Engineering, or ideally onto an apprenticeship

How much will the course cost me?

This course is free of charge for 16 – 18 year olds. There may be an additional cost for trips and equipment but this will be disclosed prior to starting your course.

What will I study?

Course content: This course involves 3 days of study a week. The course will give learners the opportunity to engage in learning which will provide opportunities to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life, whilst developing their knowledge and awareness of Motor Engineering Maths and English: Alongside this programme you will complete Functional Skills maths and English. These lessons will give you the key skills to progress effectively in everyday life and employment. Note: if you achieve a grade D in either English or Maths then you will be working towards a further GCSE alongside your Functional skills. Work related learning: The work related learning programme focuses on the high expectations of employers, encouraging and supporting learners to develop the skills required to progress into other vocational areas and employment. This includes subject areas such as equality and diversity, healthy living, money management and enterprise activities, Volunteer work and soft skills development.
