Course Overview

The awarding body for this Level 1 qualification is Cache and it will be accredited through Lancashire Adult Learning. 

The aim of this course is to provide the learners with an introduction to Disability through looking more closely at three units/topics: Disability Awareness, Physical Disabilities and Learning Disabilities. 

Having a better awareness of disability, the impact it can have on individuals and how to effectively support individuals is beneficial for anyone working or volunteering in a person-facing role especially within the Health and Social Care Sector.   

These may be learners who wish to access this training with a view to progressing to further qualifications or employment within health and social care, to complement other qualifications within health or health and social care, or to develop in their current job role within health and social care.

What will I learn?

During this course learners will find out more about: 

 The difference between disability and impairment 

The Medical and Social Model of disability 

Current disability related legislation 

Attitudes and barriers faced by people with disabilities 

The main causes of physical disability 

The importance of a person-centred approach when working with individuals with a physical disability 

The challenges of living with a physical disability 

The main causes of learning disability 

The importance of a person-centred approach when working with individuals with a learning disability 

How to promote inclusion when working with individuals with disabilities. 

How will the course be assessed?

Learners attend weekly sessions and engage in learning activities to support the learning outcomes. Progressing each week, learning will be structured towards completing both individual and group activities to increase knowledge and understanding which will be assessed using a range of methods. 

Further support and learning can be accessed through the Moodle page, which will support the length of the course with activities, resources and further reading links.

Progression and Careers

Regular submission of work that will be assessed and reviewed weekly. 

Learners will receive feedback in order to further develop their knowledge   

Learners will assess their knowledge at the start of the course and again at the end against the learning outcomes. This allows them to identify how much they have learnt and where they might need to do further study or research.  

Learners will also be supported to set an individual target(s) for the course based on starting points, personal goals and career aspirations.
